Ruby Thornton poisoned Kate Thornton at the beginning of the story, and it's taken the whole story to take effect.

Story of Kate Thornton who starts off fine and healthy, Kate has a stressful work life and is often stuck in the office, being a lawyer. she is a single mum to her daughter Ruby and son Jacob. Ruby is an average person, she is an adult but still lives with Kate. Jacob is slightly younger than Ruby and is around 18 years old he also lives at home but he is more rebellious and disrespectful than Ruby. The film starts with Kate rushing of to work and Ruby going to her small job at a book shop, Jacob is asleep on the chair. we see Kates day progress and we establish her busy lifestyle, we then cut to Rubys relaxed work environment where she organises books, Ruby is holding chemistry books and putting them away. Jacob enters the shop looking annoyed, him and Ruby have a brief conversation about why and its because he's been expelled from school, determined to not let Kate find out Jacob asks Ruby for a job in the book store to which Ruby says yes. later on in the day we see Ruby making dinner for everyone she takes the plates and everyone eats it and enjoys it. Kate leaves the table to do work which causes Jacob to become annoyed. Jacob argues with Kate as she is not doing anything around the house and leaving Jacob and Ruby o doe everything, Jacob becomes extremely mad and smashes plates. The next day Kate is unwell and doesn't go to work.we see Kate deteriorate and become worse. Within the next week or so Kate deteriorates drastically and calls an ambulance, Kate is rushed to hospital and taken to ICU. All the doctors and healthcare professionals are completely unsure of the problem. Jacob anxiously leaves the hospital for "fresh air", Ruby is also anxious as she can't find Jacob. Ruby is then told she can see Kate so she does. The nurse leaves her alone for a bit to talk to Kate Ruby begins to cry and then says "you just wouldn't die would you? even the poison wouldn't work" this is when we realise Ruby has been slowly poisoning Kate day by day.

How would my twist of "story" be influenced by other films?

My story is heavily influenced by the red herrings in High Maintenance, both my story and high maintenance start off with a relaxed comfortable family dynamic but as the story progresses we se a toxic unhappy family dynamic with extreme arguments and anger between two characters. Throughout High maintenance we see the woman acting like a human and not a robot that is a red herring because she turn outs to be a robot like her husbands, this is similar in my story because we see a bad relationship between Jacob and Kate therefore we expect him to be poisoning Kate when it is revealed she has been poisoned however the twist is that its Kate. I would make the lighting go from bright to dark to emphasise the sinister turn or the short film. The use of darkness would be similar to pitch black heist as that short film uses darkness to create and ominous tone.

Comments

  1. A good start Millie! I enjoyed the summary of your short film and the twist.

Also, well done for focussing on one specific element of the film- red herrings- in your analysis.

Please improve upon this by expanding on your comments on lighting, and go into more detail as to how you would use audio/visual elements from other films in order to improve your own.

About a girl

How does the director make an impact on the audience through the character of the girl? The director uses a direct address to the audience, this makes the audience feel a connection the character as she is addressing us directly. This makes the plot twist at the end more hard hitting and impactful on the audience. The character directly addressing the audience makes the audience feel like they understand the character and her life as she is telling it. The direct address allows the audience to hear the girls accent and how she speaks which implies her class where she is from, the direct address also allows us to understand in depth her opinions on her family and friends first hand, the information comes straight from her. The direct address is effective because we are given a lot information directly from the person instead of watching it slowly unfold through her narration. Because we understand the characters lifestyle, family life and aspirations, the audience feels like they u...

Connect

On your blog, justify ONE of the interpretations of Connect (or make up another) by referencing the Mise-En-Scene or filmmaking. (2 paragraphs) Connect is about the mundanity of modern life, the characters are tired and bored, their facial expressions show their exhaustion. The costumes the actors are wearing are mostly suits or formal clothes, mostly grey, this could reflect the boring nature of modern day life. The dark lighting reflects the mundane nature of modern life. One of the characters on the bus is asleep, he is also wearing a dark suit this reflects the slow nature of modern life. The main character doesn't talk and is often daydreaming, this is her escapism from her boring journey. she also touches hands with a man, this highlights her need for escapism. this impacts the audience as they can relate, most journeys home from work are often like this, boring, mundane and exhausting. Connect also uses mostly close up shots to show the characters facial expressions. the ch...
