evaluate the two twists of high maintenance

High Maintenance is dystopian short film about a boring marriage where the partners are frustrated and unhappy. The opening shot pans from the back of the husbands head specifically focusing on the neck, this is foreshadowing as the wife later grabs his neck and turns him off as he is a robot. The room is dimly lit showing the atmosphere is intimate and romantic, however this is contrasted throughs the fact they are opposite each other but far apart. this physical distance reflects their emotional and romantic distance. The husband eats very mechanically with over exaggerated sound effects. This hints to audience he is a robot, he is also a computer analyst which shows he works with computers which would make sense considering he is one. The close up of the wife's shows and emphasises she is bored and unhappy with her husband. Throughout the first part of the short film there is a lot of over the shoulder shots where we see the wife but only the back of the husbands head, this means we don't need to see the husband because he isn't real and only temporary therefore hinting he is a robot. The wife states the 'asparagus is an aphrodisiac' the husband questions it intently showing he only cares about the logical side to things, this also hints that he is a robot. When the wife throws the wine the husband barely reacts, this shows is lack of understand of human emotions and therefore hints he is a robot. When the wife is ranting about her horrible marriage she says 'short mechanical sex' this also references robots and shows they are both mechanical. The first plot twist is somewhat predictable when you rewatch the short film but when you first watch it seems like an ordinary couple who are just unhappy. There are some things that are confusing and make the audience unsure if the husband is a robot

About a girl

How does the director make an impact on the audience through the character of the girl? The director uses a direct address to the audience, this makes the audience feel a connection the character as she is addressing us directly. This makes the plot twist at the end more hard hitting and impactful on the audience. The character directly addressing the audience makes the audience feel like they understand the character and her life as she is telling it. The direct address allows the audience to hear the girls accent and how she speaks which implies her class where she is from, the direct address also allows us to understand in depth her opinions on her family and friends first hand, the information comes straight from her. The direct address is effective because we are given a lot information directly from the person instead of watching it slowly unfold through her narration. Because we understand the characters lifestyle, family life and aspirations, the audience feels like they u...

Connect

On your blog, justify ONE of the interpretations of Connect (or make up another) by referencing the Mise-En-Scene or filmmaking. (2 paragraphs) Connect is about the mundanity of modern life, the characters are tired and bored, their facial expressions show their exhaustion. The costumes the actors are wearing are mostly suits or formal clothes, mostly grey, this could reflect the boring nature of modern day life. The dark lighting reflects the mundane nature of modern life. One of the characters on the bus is asleep, he is also wearing a dark suit this reflects the slow nature of modern life. The main character doesn't talk and is often daydreaming, this is her escapism from her boring journey. she also touches hands with a man, this highlights her need for escapism. this impacts the audience as they can relate, most journeys home from work are often like this, boring, mundane and exhausting. Connect also uses mostly close up shots to show the characters facial expressions. the ch...
